Additional Interests

Athletics, Health and Fitness:

Outside the surgery, I am a keen health and fitness enthusiast and qualified fitness instructor. I am passionate about Athletics and in 1990 I won the Gold Medal at the Scottish Junior Championships for the 400 meter sprint. I also graduated with a Blue in Athletics from the University of Edinburgh (1992) after representing the University at various national events. More recently, and now much slower, I was privileged to run the 2016 London Marathon which is one of the greatest sports events in the UK that brings the country together in aid of numerous charities. You can normally find me in a gym and I strongly believe that a clean diet and healthy lifestyle is vital in preventing disease. I encourage my patients to try and make healthy choices as much as possible.

Business Leadership & Management:

I hold additional management qualifications at a strategic and chartered professional skills level. I am a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute and Fellow of the Institute of Leadership & Management. In my RAF career I have been awarded the Royal Air Force and City & Guilds MCGI Senior Award in Leadership and Management. My commitment to developing and training dental professionals has been recognised by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh with their award of Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers.  I have done courses on Advanced Dental Leadership by the Global Child Dental Fund and Medical Leadership and Management by Oxford Medical. In addition, I have undergone further training on Health Inequalities run by the Royal College of Surgeons in Glasgow and Organisational Analysis by the University of Stanford. I am very interested in online learning that does not require traditional classrooms and I am on the first cohort of a global business network programme called the PowerMBA. I strongly believe that learning from other peoples practical experience beats theory every time and it it important to therefore learn and share practice with colleagues that have real-world, tangible medical and business experience rather than just academics with cumulative hours in front of a chalkboard.

Botox and Dermal Fillers:

I have a keen interest in Facial Aesthetics and can provide Botox treatments for my patients. I have found that dental professionals who are conversant with facial anatomy are best placed to relax the lines of time whilst framing, complimenting and preserving the smile.
